Frugality to freedom

A few years ago, I discovered minimalism and it immediately resonated with me.

I grew up frugal. I like saving money more than hoarding stuff. So embracing minimalism felt perfect and natural for me.

At first, I defined it simply as: Keeping myself from buying sh*t.

After some time and a ton of readings, its meaning expanded. I realized there's more to minimalism than saying no to stuff.

On the surface, minimalism appeals to people because of aesthetics — clean lines and color palettes. But behind these simplistic designs lies a deeper purpose.

We are all victims of consumerism. Over time, we accumulate so much without noticing. Both the important things and the unnecessary. Clothes, gadgets, books, things, people, emotional baggage. Eventually, this becomes a problem one way or another.

The things you own end up owning you.
-Chuck Palahniuk

As life sometimes entices me to drift from minimalism, I wrote this as a reminder: minimalism isn’t just about owning less, but about regaining freedom.
